If you want to buy alcohol before 10:00 AM on Sundays, you're basically out of luck in the state of Arizona. According to the Phoenix New Times, Arizona law states that liquor cannot be purchased outside the hours of 10:00AM -2:00AM on Sundays. Other days of the week, Arizonians can purchase alcohol between 6:00 AM and 2:00 AM.
Yet some Arizona residents and Phoenix DUI attorneys might be happy to know that certain state legislatures are looking to change the law to accommodate those looking to get their early morning booze on Sundays.
The Phoenix New Times reports that Representative Matt Heinz of Tuscon sponsored HB 2552, because he heard complaints that some people were unable to purchase alcohol in the morning for a party being held later in the day.
The bill calls for the Sunday sale time to be pushed up to 6:00 AM, which is the starting time of sale every other day of the week.
The East Valley Tribune reports that representatives from the Arizona Restaurant Association and Phoenix International Raceway have also come out in support of the measure.
However, some legislatures including Republican Rich Crandall from Mesa are opposed to HB 2552, saying that new alcohol purchase hours on Sundays can lead to an increase in drunk driving and domestic violence incidents.
"You can tie so many of Arizona's problems, family problems, back to alcohol," Mr. Crandall told East Valley Tribune.
While some people may see Mr. Crandall's attitude as a major buzz kill, he still has quite a bit of support on this matter. For updates on HB 2552, visit the state Legislature's website.
