Just 100 miles outside the city of Phoenix, sits the tourist town of Sedona, known for its red rock formation, hiking trails, and scenic beauty. Currently, the city's policy in Sedona forbids the consumption of any alcohol in parks. However, this might change very soon.
Sedona Red Rock News reports that the city is looking to lift the restrictions of alcohol on its parks because council members believe the sale of alcohol will provide additional opportunities for the city to attract visitors for special events and because officials predict that a new alcohol policy will increase sales-tax revenue.
City officials decided at a February 9 meeting to work with the city's legal division and law enforcement to consider the new options. The city council has proposed to allow any government, corporate, social, fraternal group or family to apply to the city for permission to provide alcoholic beverages in city parks, so long as it is not distributed outside their permitted group, according to Sedona Red Rock News.
The proposed policy is similar to another policy that was proposed and then vetoed by the city council in February 2007. There was a 5-2 vote against the Parks Recreation Commission recommendation to allow non-sale of alcoholic beverages with nonprofit organizations for special events.
But if Sedona does decide to allow alcohol consumptions in parks, how will it impact drunk driving? Some residents worry that by lightening contraints on alcohol, the city will see an increase in DUI related accidents.
