Teaching UA Students About Drunk Driving

As college students get ready for spring break, certain non-profit organizations are coming together to educate students about the risks of drunk driving. The University of Arizona recently had its annual Hunter White Spring Break Preparedness program on February 28, which is held annually in order to teach students about emergency preparedness and to encourage students not to drink and drive..

Now in its third year, the Tuscon Citizen reports that the program featured keynote speaker Mark Sterner, who has traveled around the country sharing his DUI horror story. Mr. Sterner killed three of his fraternity brothers in college, after he drove while intoxicated. He shares his story among college students to teach people about the dangers of driving while impaired.

Spring break for UA students typically includes a trip to Rocky Point, Mexico, but university officials encouraged students to be safe when traveling south of the border. Students in attendance received a card with Rocky Point/Mexico emergency contact and response information. The Hunter White Spring Break Preparedness program comes after Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity member Hunter White was killed in a drunk driving accident in Rocky Point, Mexico back in 2001. His travel partners were left with limited knowledge about foreign policies and emergency assistance.

The program is primarily aimed for members of University of Arizona's Greek Community, as the program each year is organized by the University of Arizona Fraternity and Sorority Programs Office. But the program is seen as helpful for other UA college students and Tuscon community members.
