R U Buzzed? - iPhone Application Could Prevent DUI

Have you ever been out for a night of drinking, and you wonder whether you're too drunk to drive home? Now there's an app for that.

While it's always best to play it safe and avoid driving if you've consumed any amount of alcohol, The Colorado Department of Transportation recently lauched an iPhone application that allows users to calculate their blood-alcohol level. The Denver Post reports that users enter in basic information including weight, sex, number of hours you've been drinking and the type and amount of alcoholic beverages you've consumed, which leads to a calcuated BAC level of the user.

This application called "R-U-Buzzed? BAC Calculator" is available for free through iTunes. Yet the app has become quite controversial, because many Arizona DUI attorneys would question the accuracy of such a program. Attorneys and transporation officials say that this application should simply be used as a guide and should not be seen as a factual way of determining a person's blood-alcohol level.

Even members of Mothers Against Drunk Driving disapprove of such a program, because there are many factors that affect a person's impairment level that aren't taken into account with R-U-Buzzed.

"I think there's a lot of room for error, and people just really have to understand it's an estimate and the point is to plan before you've been drinking," Emily Tompkins, an executive director of MADD, told te Denver Post.

The application reminds users to designate a sober driver before drinking. Perhaps Arizonians will find this app useful if they see the BAC calculator as a simple guide, rather than an accurate portrayal of a blood-alcohol level.
