Cinco De Mayo has traditionally been a day to celebrate Mexican heritage and pride. In Arizona, this holiday is one of the biggest drinking days of the year. This year, the state saw a large number of DUI arrests and a surprising large number of extreme DUI arrests.
Arizona DUI attorneys will probably be getting a large number of clients now that the Cinco De Mayo celebration is over. Associated Press reports that the Arizona DUI Task Force arrested more than 170 individuals for driving under the influence on the night of Cinco De Mayo. Nearly one third of the drivers arrested on suspicion of DUI were cited for extreme DUI.
A person is cited with an extreme DUI if his or her blood-alcohol level is over .15 percent. This is almost twice the legal limit of .08. With an extreme DUI charge, the suspect faces much more severe consequences including the possibility of a longer jail sentence or longer probation. Super extreme DUI offenders are those who had a blood-alcohol level of .20 percent or more. FindLaw states that with a super extreme DUI conviction, an offender could face an even stricter punishment, where the minimum jail sentence for a two-time super extreme DUI offender is 180 days.
The Arizona DUI Task Force had 224 participating officers and deputies from various departments participating in the Cinco De Mayo DUI checkpoints. In addition to the drunk driving arrests, law enforcers say that they were able to make 26 drug arrests. Perhaps DUI checkpoints can be an effective form of law enforcement after all.
