West Valley's DUI Task Force Making Numerous DUI Arrests

On certain nights there are 40 to 60 police officers in a particular West Valley city working for the West Valley DUI Task Force. The task force heavily cracks down on drunk drivers in the area, and as a result many people are arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence with such a large patrol.

The Arizona Republic reports that the West Valley DUI Task Force consists of officers from police departments in Avondale, Goodyear, Buckeye, Peoria, El Mirage, Glendale, Phoenix, Tolleson, Surprise, as well as the Department of Public Safety and Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. The task force was formed in the mid-1990s with support from the Arizona Governor's Office of Highway Safety. The agency provides funding for training, equipment, and overtime pay for law enforcers.

Officers with the West Valley DUI Task Force told Arizona Republic they often arrest drivers who show even the slightest signs of impairment. Even if a person has a blood-alcohol level below .08, an officer can still make an arrest. However, Phoenix DUI attorneys are often able to defend DUI suspects that have a low BAC level and can usually get the charges dropped.

According to the Arizona Governor's Office of Highway Safety, the task force was able to make 4,192 misdemeanor DUI arrests, 635 aggravated DUI arrests, 2,204 extreme DUI arrests, and 178 DUI arrests that were for drivers under the age of 21.

In order to avoid a drunk driving arrest, drivers should avoid drinking while driving and be on the lookout for officers with the West Valley DUI Task Force. Drivers can probably suspect that officers will be out and about on Wednesday for Cinco De Mayo.
