AZ DUI Checkpoints: Sierra Vista Checkpoint Yields Few Arrests

| No TrackBacks

Members of the Southeastern Arizona DUI Task Force conducted a sobriety checkpoint last Saturday along Route 80, just north of Davis Road in Sierra Vista. KVOA News reports that approximately 456 vehicles went through the checkpoint, but that only tow drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The AZ DUI checkpoints do cost the state of Arizona a great deal of money that is funded through grant money from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety. DUI checkpoints will continue this year on holidays and after various community events, but Arizona DUI attorneys may argue that checkpoints are not an effective way of keeping drunk drivers off the road.

While last Saturday's checkpoint only led to two DUI arrests, law enforcers reported two undocumented immigrant load vehicles that passed through the checkpoint to the state's Border Patrol for processing. Law enforcers also found marijuana in a vehicle that was stopped and were even able to recover a stolen vehicle that was driving through the checkpoint. So it certainly seems like law enforcers in Sierra Vista are able to make many arrests that are not DUI related at sobriety checkpoints in the community.

Arizona DUI attorneys often represent suspects that were arrested at DUI checkpoints for a non-DUI related criminal offense. This is because an Arizona DUI attorney is familiar with the laws of checkpoints and how vehicles can be legally searched when it comes to passing through checkpoints.
