DUI Arrests in Arizona Pile Up on Memorial Day Weekend

| No TrackBacks

Increased efforts of DUI enforcement across the state proved this weekend to yield a large number of drunk driving arrests. Associated Press reports that over Memorial Day weekend, Arizona's DUI task forces arrested more than 470 individuals for driving under the influence.

The DUI arrests this year were much higher than last year's Memorial Day drunk driving arrests. Statistics from Gov. Jan Brewer's office showed that there were only 291 DUI arrests during the 2009 Memorial Day weekend.

Perhaps the large increase in DUI arrests is not due to an increase of drunk drivers on the road, but instead is due to a larger number of law enforcers that are dedicated to stopping drunk drivers. This year, statewide DUI task forces in Arizona had 1,334 participating officers and deputies at multiple DUI checkpoints.

In addition to the crackdown through DUI checkpoints, law enforcers were also able to catch drunk drivers through saturation patrols. Through a saturation patrol, a large number of officers enforce drunk driving in a small geographic area. With an overwhelming presence of law enforcers, this method is often seen as an effective method by authorities.

Anybody who feels that they were wrongfully arrested for driving under the influence should contact an Arizona DUI attorney. An attorney can often determine if a DUI arrest was wrongful or if a suspect's rights were violated during a checkpoint.
