Clerks at Safeway stores are going the extra mile and doing more than just checking a person's ID when the customer purchase's alcohol. The store now requires a customer to swipe their ID card on a credit card device and sign on the PIN pad after the ID is checked.
The Arizona Daily Star reports that these signatures are not required by state law, but can protect the store of legal trouble if there was ever an investigation. With this system, Safeway can prove that its clerks were diligent about checking IDs. If a store does not have records of a person's signature, the Arizona Department of Liquor Licenses and Control states that a judge can presume the clerk did not check for ID.
Perhaps spending an extra minute in the checkout line could help prevent underage drinking and as well as prevent underage persons from getting a DUI. Many people in the state of Arizona have applauded Safeway's efforts since the program's implementation.
"Anytime a company puts a policy in place to help the underage-drinking problem we have, I think that's a good idea," Yolanda Herrera, chair of the Pima County-Tucson Task Force to Reduce Underage Drinking, told the Arizona Daily Star.
The state of Arizona has a zero tolerance policy for those under the age of 21 who drive under the influence, meaning that a BAC level that is .01 or above can lead to a DUI charge. After a DUI arrest, a person under the age of 21 still has the right to be represented by an Arizona DUI attorney to ensure that all the evidence is properly analyzed in a given case.
