Just how effective was the National Impaired Driving Crackdown campaign? The Arizona Republic reports that the national 17-day campaign to enforce drunk driving laws from August 20 through September 6 certainly had an effect on the state of Arizona. The Arizona Republic reports that the state's DUI task force arrested more than 1,700 people on suspicion of driving under the influence during this period.

The thousands of people arrested for DUI this year slaughtered last year's numbers. As of yesterday, the Governor's Office of Highway Safety had not released the total number of DUI arrests during the 17-day period, but the more than 1,700 DUI arrests so far exceed last year's 1,318 DUI arrests during the same period.

Perhaps this year's increase in DUI arrests is not due to an increase in drunk drivers, but instead an increase in officers enforcing the state's drunk driving laws. ABC News reports that participating officers increased from 1303 in 2009 to 5423 in 2010. The number of traffic stops more than doubled from last year, with a reported 30,068 this year compared to 13,697 in 2009.

There are people in Arizona who are wrongfully arrested for driving under the influence each year. If you suspect that law enforcers did not go through the proper procedures when making an arrest, including conducting the wrong procedures at a sobriety checkpoint, you should contact an Arizona DUI attorney to receive the best defense possible in your drunk driving case.
